How to use the general search?

General search enables you to search for any information within the all the Saaga pages (texts, titles etc), using the different keywords.

The keyword might be:
  • place names, for example Viljandi [town], Hiiumaa [county], Vastseliina [parish], Noarootsi [manor], [Hanguse] village
  • other words which migh occur in the titles of records, for instance personaalraamat (list of parish members), kirjavahetus (correspndence), kogudus (congregation), kaart (map) etc
  • dates of records, for example 1869, 1918
You will get more precise result when you combine different keywords, for example:
  • Sõmerpalu hingerevisjon 1834 (soul revision of Sõmerpalu manor from 1834)
  • Saaremaa vakuraamat (Wackenbuch of Saaremaa)
  • Konstantin Päts kirjavahetus (person name Konstantin Päts, keyword correspondence)
You should take into consideration, that
  • Saaga comprises only tiny part of records which are being preserved in the National Archives of Estonia. You will find the exact list of of all the record from archival information system AIS
  • Using general search may not help you to find all the records relevant to your research, although those documents may be present in Saaga. It is important to know that not all the record titles contain the place names.
  • General search does not search for the database entries (register of maps, construction designs, coats of arms, imprints).

If you are family history researcher and want to search for family names, we recommend you to have a look at Name registry of parish member lists of Lutheran congregations. However, the name registry contains only the names present in the parish member lists and it does not include other document types (registers of births, marriages, deaths, church books of orthodox church etc).
