“Would Communist Rule be Conceivable in Estonia without Russian Forces of Occupation?” From Question and Answer Evenings in Valjala Rural Municipality

Both political and economic questions, along with the problem of coping with daily life, and the question of Estonia’s future (in addition to many kinds of local problems, mainly with representatives of the Soviet authorities) agitated people’s minds in post-war Estonia. Three documents are presented in this publication — the questions posed to Soviet propagandists / lecturers at question and answer evenings in Valjala Rural Municipality, Saaremaa County in 1946. The questions were posed anonymously in writing. For this reason, they faithfully reflect the world of ideas of that time and thus are valuable sources for intellectual history.
