Content DescriptionAt dusk a group of Estonians in Hamilton gathered in a small park to light memorial candles in memory of victims of the Soviet mass deportation of March 25, 1949 in which thousands of women, children and men were packed into cattle cars for the long ride to the isolated hinterlands of Siberia. Everyone at the candle lighting were deep into their own private thoughts. A 95 year-old had memories of her sister who died in Siberia. Others remembered relatives – sisters, fathers, grandparents etc. The president of the Hamilton Estonian Society, Evy Beraldo, commented on the inhuman conditions of the train ride. The evening continued in a church building with coffee and treats. At the commemoration non-Estonians asked about the occasion. When told what it meant they commented, “What a beautiful tribute”.
