Sisuline kirjeldusDuring the 1940-1944 Soviet and German occupations of Estonia some 3000 young Estonian men, who found it unacceptable to wear the uniform of a military force of an occupying foreign power, into which they would be forcibly mobilized, escaped Finland to join the Finnish forces in defence of their homeland. These men were known as "Finnish boys," "Soomepoisid," honoured and celebrated in Finland as one of their own. Many of them were arrested and served time in Siberian concentration camps after the Soviet Union's re-occupation of Estonia in 1944 having been captured after returning to Estonia to fight the Red Army even knowing their sacrifice would be futile. In March the Finnish embassy in Tallinn recognized the selfless contribution of the few "Soomepoisid," who despite their ample years still were able to participate. Gen. Riho Terras, second from left.
