The main task of the National Archives is to ensure preservation and usability of society&#8217;s written memory, documented cultural heritage for today&#8217;s and future generations. On the other hand, the National Archives guarantees the protection of citizens&#8217; basic rights and duties as well as the transparency of the democratic state through the holding and preservation of archival records. The National Archives is a government agency in the domain of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hm.ee\">Ministry of Education and Research<\/a> acting on the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riigiteataja.ee\/en\/eli\/ee\/504032016002\/consolide\/current\">Archives Act<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/archival_rules_2020.pdf\">Archival rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What we do<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The National Archives collects and preserves records documenting history, culture, nationhood and social conditions in Estonia not depending on time or place of creation, or\u00a0character of data medium.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Strategy_2024-2026.pdf\">Strategy of the National Archives of Estonia 2024\u20132026<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The functions of the National Archives are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>to collect documented data important for our society<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>to offer broadest use of the collections<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>to keep the collections in good preservation conditions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>to supervise institutions in management and safekeeping of records<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>to participate in development of the national electronic\u00a0records management<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>to receive digital records<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>collections<\/strong> of the National Archives include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>about<strong> 10 million records<\/strong> (the oldest\u00a0from\u00a01240)<\/li>\n<li>about<strong> 36 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ra.ee\/dgs\/explorer.php\">digital images online<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>ca<\/em> 5% of the collections)<\/li>\n<li>about <strong>12,000<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meediateek.ee\/\"><strong>films<\/strong> online<\/a>\u00a0(the oldest from 1908)<\/li>\n<li>about <strong>880,000<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meediateek.ee\/\"><strong>photos<\/strong> online<\/a>\u00a0(older ones\u00a0from the 19th century)<\/li>\n<li>more than <strong>150,000 maps<\/strong>, <em>ca<\/em> 1\/3 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/en\/arhiivitund\/rahvusarhiivi-advendikalender\/kaardid-2\/\">online<\/a>\u00a0(the oldest from the first half of the 17th century)<\/li>\n<li>factually <strong>2,200<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ra.ee\/pitserid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seals<\/a><\/li>\n<li>about <strong>1,500<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ra.ee\/pargamendid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">parchments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The collections of the National Archives can be found via <a href=\"http:\/\/ais.ra.ee\/\">the Archival Information System AIS <\/a>using the titles and names of the archives, series and records.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"462\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Inglise-keeles-struktuur.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Inglise-keeles-struktuur.webp 740w, https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Inglise-keeles-struktuur-300x187.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.ra.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Inglise-keeles-struktuur-600x375.webp 600w\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Archives of Estonia is the centre of archival administration in Estonia and has its departments in Tallinn, Tartu, Rakvere and Valga.
