34712PhotosFK_136-EE-2019-02-22-23Küünlapäev has become an important annual event for Toronto Estonian women's academic societies/sororities. Since it was established in 1960, "Candlemas," as it is known in Europe, is amongst other traditions taken as a holiday for women. On this day women put aside their daily chores, they join to imbibe, eat and celebrate together. For the past 15 years the event has been gathering momentum in Toronto, is well-attended, lively and meaningful for women in age from 19-91.

34714PhotosFK_136-EE-2019-02-22-24Like the wine served, Küünlapäev has aged well. Each year a new theme is chosen for the occasion. This year the theme was "õed/sisters." Each sorority is faced with the task of offering a clever, unique presentation of the idea. All of the sororities, E.N.Ü.S., korp! Filiae Patriae, korp! Indla, korp! Amicitia, and korp! Fidentia were equal to the challenge and received enthusiastic approval from participants that filled Tartu College's hall to capacity.

34716PhotosFK_136-EE-2019-02-22-25December 28, 2018, approximately 700 people came together to join in a Sing-Along Messiah in Calgary, Alberta, Canada at a NW church. This event was the brainchild of Astrid Terri Simmermon who was born in London, Ontario. As an enthusiastic soprano who sang with the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and other community groups throughout the years, she had asked Hirvo Surva of Tallinn, Estonia if he might enjoy conducting a mass choir in Calgary. He indicated interest and this was the year it came to fruition. A multi-denominational and European representation of the area, approximately 700 people came together, with professional and semiprofessional soloists, organists and string ensemble, to perform this wonderful work under Surva's skilled direction. Also in attendance was Külliva Kangur, Honorary Consul of Estonia from Edmonton, Alberta. She presented Hirvo with a gift from the Alberta Heritage Society and spoke briefly prior to the performance. Surva was also presented with a framed fan chart with genealogical information of his own family and a promise of further investigative research by the Church where the Sing-Along was held. As attendance was not taken, it is not known how many Estonians were participating but it is estimated that there were at least 25 of Estonian descent participating!
